# A flood map for a Czech address

> The insurers’ map shows the zone, the state’s maps the floodplain, and baseray adds the building at the address: floors, footprint, height and local rainfall.

## What the building record adds. The insured building, not just a point on a map.

- **Weather at the site.** Yearly rainfall, frost days and temperature extremes of recent years at the building, where the data is complete.
- **Footprint, height and volume.** For a sum insured that fits the real building. Every height says whether it was measured or estimated.
- **Floors and age.** The number of floors and the completion period from the register, where known.
- **A whole portfolio.** The same facts for thousands of addresses at once, through the API or as CSV.

## For insurance. The zone says where the building stands; the record, what is insured.

1. **Find the zone.** On the flood map of the [Czech Insurance Association](https://www.cap.cz/) (ČAP), enter the address and note the zone, 1 to 4.
2. **Check the floodplain.** The Ministry of the Environment (MŽP) publishes flood hazard maps in its [Central Data Store](https://cds.mzp.cz/); floodplains are in [POVIS](https://www.povis.cz/).
3. **Add the building.** Floors, footprint and volume from baseray, so the sum insured fits the real building. baseray does not show flood zones.

## Flood map questions. What the record holds, and what it does not yet.

### What do flood zones 1 to 4 mean?

They are the insurers’ grading by flood risk: zone 1 is the lowest risk, zone 4 the highest. Each insurer sets its own terms for each zone.

### Is a floodplain the same as a flood zone?

No. A floodplain is designated by the water authority under the law; flood zones are the insurers’ model. The two maps can therefore differ.

### How does baseray help an insurer?

For each address it gives the floors, footprint, height and volume, so the sum insured fits the real building. For a whole portfolio through the API or as CSV.
